It's getting chilly

December 1st and Winter is coming!

Last night it dipped down to 45F (7C). For some of my tropical plants, 50F is the limit, and 45F is pushing it.

So yesterday I collected the most sensitive plants and stuck them in to the garage. In went some of the orchids, like the Vandas and Phalaenopsis, a few Philodendrons, Anthuriums, Calatheas, and a couple of  bromeliads with emerging blooms.

first cold night of this season

Of course today I will have to haul them all out, since it is warming up again. And from now on, the weather forecast will be followed very closely.  We will have cool nights until the end of February, and maybe into early  March.

Most of my tropical plants, like the gingers will go dormant and I don't have to worry about them, but others will freeze to the ground. Good thing about them, as soon as it warms up again, they will grow back fast.

  1. Looks like quite a chore! Ah, the things we do for the plants we love!
