Cloudless Sulphur

“How does one become a butterfly?” she asked. ”You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.”

[Trina Paulus]

Caterpillar of Cloudless Sulphur butterfly munching on a Popcorn Cassia flower.

Interesting, the caterpillars are yellow when eating the flowers, but green when eating the leaves.

Host plants for the caterpillar are plants in the bean family and all Cassias.

I planted the popcorn cassia to attract those lemon yellow butterflies. I decided on the variety Cassia didymobotrya since is not as cold sensitive as other Cassias and its leaves smell like freshly buttered popcorn. Yumm!

  1. What a lovely butterfly, and I like how the caterpillar changes colour, depending on what it is eating. Imagine if we could do that, we'd be like rainbows.

  3. Lovely photos! I know we do have this butterfly visit now and then, but I do not see it very often. And I have never seen it in larvae form...very nice.

  4. How interesting that it changes color! Wouldn't that be fun if we changed color according to what we ate? :O I think I've seen this butterfly in my garden, but never knew what the caterpillar looked like. I'll be on the lookout for it now - yellow or green!
