Today's Passiflora flowers

Passiflora incense. Large purple blossoms, all frilly and positively glowing.

I can't really say which of my Passis is my favorite, I love them all. Here are the ones flowering today :)

Next is the Passiflora vitifolia, large tomato red, and it flowers on and off throughout the warm season. A large growing vine, but it does not sucker.

Contrary to all the other passion vines, the Passiflora vitifolia does not attract butterflies. So, if you want a red flowering passion vine and a host plant for butterflies, I suggest the Passiflora 'Lady Margaret' .

A bit smaller in flower size is the Passiflora caerulea. This one is a 'weedy' plant, be warned,  it sprouts up everywhere.  It is the favorite of the Gulf Fritillary butterflies and that's the main reason I grow it.  Since I must pull weeds anyways, I don't really mind pulling the suckers.

Some of my dainty Passifloras come next, the flowers are small jewels

Passiflora biflora, white - yellow - green

Passiflora yucatanensis, white - orange - green

Passiflora foetida (var. gossypifolia), white - soft pink, I grow this one in a hanging basket

And last one for today, the Passiflora trifasciata, also in a hanging basket.

The leaves you see on the picture are not the trifasciata leaves, but somehow some root pieces of the Ornamental Jam got into this basket. I'll have to untangle the two vines sooner or later :-/

  3. It's too bad that the red Passiflora vitifolia doesn't attract butterflies - I think that's the prettiest passion flower I've seen! Your passion flowers are stunning. Some of them are so unusual looking - it's like high fashion couture for plants!

  4. Never knew you can tame them so well.
I had seen them growing ever so wildly creeping everwhere and often without bloom or flowers but with all kinds of pest & problems.

  5. It isn't so bad that one of all my Passis does not attract the Butterflies, since all the other vines get munched up pretty badly, so I have at least one of those vines that looks lush with intact leaves ;-)

  6. I don't know about taming, I control the 'weedy' ones by pulling the suckers and chopping the vines way back twice a year.
The small passiflora vines I keep in pots, so I don't even know if they would cause a problem if planted in a flowerbed.
I must admit, I grow my passifloras for the caterpillars and therefore most of them look chewed up and at times without a single leaf on them ;-)
