Exploring the Stoney-Baynard ruins

After a family reunion at the Disney Resort we had a little time left before heading home and we wanted to visit a historic site.

Hilton Head
We decided on the Stoney-Baynard ruins at Sea Pines. The site of the ruin is located in the six-acre Baynard Ruins Park.

It's a short walk through the woods to get to the former grand plantation house. We were alone, just birds, insects and lizards around. It was eerie, the Quiet, the half-shade and the Spanish moss... I can understand why there are ghost stories about this place.

It wasn't that long ago, around 1800, that this place was a grand estate, with a beautiful staircase leading up to a wrap-around porch, white washed walls, green shutters. The house, kitchen building, workers' quarters and overseer's home sat in the middle of the 1000 acre cotton plantation.

They built it on the highest point to catch even the slightest breeze, with the first floor of Tabby, while the second floor was wood construction. Tabby are blocks made of cement with oyster shells, sand and water. One can still see the oyster shells in the walls

A fire in 1867 destroyed the building, and overall the story of this place does not read happy. Gambling, debt, unpaid taxes, war ....

A little wildflower caught my eye
