• About – Gardening in Myrtle Glen

    Hello everyone :-)

This blog is about my what’s going on in Myrtle Glen, our little piece of Earth.
I will show mostly pictures, but also quotes, poems, gardening tips, anything short and sweet. You won’t find pages and pages of text ;-)
Garden Projects will be mentioned via a post, but can be found on their own page.

    Myrtle Glen

We moved to Avalon Park, a new subdivision on the east side of Orlando FL  in July 2003, and started from scratch. The builder covered all with St. Augustine grass, planted a few so-called foundation plants at the front of the house, and put in a sprinkler system with pvc water lines going all over the place without sense whatsoever.

First step was to raise a fence, and create the water garden area. I brought with me divisions of water plants and some water snails, and they needed to get out of the laundry tubs and into a permanent home.

In 2005 we concentrated our time and money to create ‘Myrtle Glen’, by planting 13 Natchez Crepe Myrtles, adding fruiting plants, and flower beds.

Our 1/4 acre corner lot is a certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation since 2006,
in 2007  we joined the HSUS Urban Wildlife Sanctuary Program,
since 2011 Myrtle Glen is certified as Monarch Waystation Nr. 5208 and
finally, it was  certified as Butterfly Sanctuary Nr. 521 with the North American Butterfly Association in 2011.

Gardening with our local Wildlife in mind is very important to me.  Plant Florida friendly plants, offer a water source,  and reduce pesticides. It’s so simple and so rewarding when you see butterflies and hummingbirds in your yard!

It sure is different to garden here than elsewhere in Florida, our subdivision is in the Econlockhatchee  River bed area and the soil is heavy clay and not sand. Any plants wanting good drainage won’t be too happy.
Under the blog category ‘Plants in Myrtle Glen’   I am introducing the plants that grow well in our area.

We love all the animals visiting our garden, and we do open our gates for human visitors as well. Contact me, if you like to arrange for a Garden Tour.
