Green onions on the windowsill

Does this happen to you?
Once in a while an onion starts growing in my onion pot. Just one, all others are well behaved waiting to be chopped and diced.

But that's ok, no reason to toss it out. I do what my grandma did. She had an onion growing on her windowsill at all times for the green onion shoots.

All it takes is a glass, water, and a sunny windowsill. Fill the water just barely under the onion. Too much water and the onion rots. The onion will sense the water and will send out roots.

Btw, green onions, scallions, spring onions, salad onions, all the same, I was told. They are just immature onions.
